Port St. Joe - Wewa Take Their Politics Seriously

After a week of debate and a threatened lawsuit by one commissioner, the Gulf County Commission has approved on a 4 to 1 vote to go to total county-wide voting.

A packed house of angry citizens was on hand for the session in Port St. Joe, which included plenty of shouting.

After some two hours the commissioners agreed to do away with the combination plan of county-wide voting and one single member district.

The fight for the change was led by Commissioner Carmen McLemore. He admits the new plan may not pass the court test.

“Now we can move forward to a federal judge and it will be up to him. I really don’t think it will pass.”

Commission Chairman Nathan Peters filed a lawsuit back in 1990 to force the single member district issue. He voted against the change this week and promised a court fight.
