Jackson County health officials are reporting the second case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis this year.

They detected the virus in a sentinel chicken in Marianna.

In September a horse just west of Marianna tested positive for EEE. Authorities are encouraging horse owners to vaccinate their animals, and they're warning everyone to protect themselves from the insects that carry the disease, mosquitoes.

Remember to practice the 5 D's. Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn. Dress in clothing that covers your skin. Use mosquito repellents that have the chemical Deet. Drain areas with standing water, like old tires and pet food dishes. That's the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes
