Jackson County sheriff's investigators are trying to find out if a 62-year-old Cypress man died accidentally, or if someone killed him.

A fisherman spotted the body of Benjamin Rush Cowherd around 9:30 Monday morning. He was floating face down in the Chipola River near the Christoff ferry boat landing off Bump Nose Road.

Authorities retrieved Cowherd's body, then began searching the area. They found Cowherd's 2002 Chevy Blazer in about 14 feet of water.

At this point they believe Cowherd drowned, but they're classifying this case as a homicide. Cowherd appeared to have at a possible gunshot wound in the shoulder.

Johnny McDaniel, Jackson County Sheriff, said, “He may have died as a result of a drown, now there's some suspicious areas that may indicate something different, So we've got the medical examiner involved in this And we'll know after the medical examiner's done with their autopsy."

If you have any information about this case, please call the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at 482-9648.
