Son, husband, father, officer; Col. William Wood was many things to many people. After his death in Iraq in October, the Army promoted him to colonel in honor of his commitment to his country.
Tuesday, the Panama City Garden Club hosted a special memorial for Col. Wood, a chance to honor this local hero once more.
Wood's name now appears on the memorial wall outside the clubhouse, next to the names of other local men and women who died in combat over the years, and soon his name will appear on another wall.
Classmates and friends of Col. Wood helped arrange a perpetual scholarship at his alma mater, Rutherford High School. High school classmate Mark Limmer says it's the least they could do.
"I really believe that bill woke up everyday thinking he could do something to change the world. He was one of those people that did it."
Rutherford High School is arranging for donations to fund the new perpetual scholarships.
