City Ponders Sexual Predator Regulation

Panama City may be ready to join a number of Florida cities that now impose tough restrictions on where sex offenders can or can't live.

City commissioners are discussing a new ordinance that would keep sex offenders and sexual predators from living within 2,500 feet of a school, church or any place where children congregate.

Mayor Lauren DeGeorge says Panama City needs the ordinance.

“Well, we need to find a way to keep them as safe as possible, and at the discussions I think you're going to find that most commissioners will feel this way also."

The city is expected to hear the first reading of the ordinance at Tuesday night’s meeting. A similar ordinance is also being discussed in Parker. It’s already been adopted in Destin late last year.
