There’s a navigation problem in Grand Lagoon. The channel known as Deepwater Point is now filling in.
The channel is located between St. Andrew's State Park and Alligator Point.
Since Hurricanes Dennis and Katrina, sand has been filling into the channel making it very difficult for boats to enter and leave in proper fashion.
Deepwater Point is now about one-fourth of its original size in width, and about half the size it needs to be depth-wise.
While water traffic is not a problem now, many like Patrick Reitkirk of SeaTow are getting concerned about the busiest time of year for Grand Lagoon.
"And of course with the summer season and spring coming up, the traffic is going to increase and that is going to cause a problem with the way the marker is positioned. It's out of position now. The channel is a lot narrower and shallower."
The worst time for going through Deepwater Point would be in the mornings when the larger vessels are leaving Grand Lagoon.
