The future of an upscale waterfront development in Mexico Beach will be in the hands of the state.
The Mexico Beach city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to send an annexation and zoning change request by the St. Joe Company to the state Department of Community Affairs.
St. Joe wants to change the zoning on 500 or so acres of land between Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base. Company officials want a mix of residential and commercial.
It plans to build 70,000 square feet of commercial space and 750 residential units, plus significant parks and trails on the land,
About 60 people showed up for the hearing, most of them against the plans. Some cited encroachment on Tyndall and its mission.
Mayor Chuck Risinger disagreed.
“I'm here to tell you now, the flight path is not an issue that their concerned about as long as we stay where we say we're going to stay."
Once the Department of Community Affairs gets the request, it could take months to come to a decision.
