U-S Airways Cancels Panama City Flights

Just three months after beginning air service to Panama City, Newschannel 7 has learned that U.S. Airways has decided it's not working out.

The airline, which began offering flights here on April 2nd, now says it will discontinue service between its Charlotte, North Carolina hub and Panama City on September 3rd.

U.S. Airways Spokesperson Michelle Mohr says there are two big reasons for pulling out: skyrocketing fuel costs and a lack of passengers.

"We've seen that our load factors on flights between Panama City and Charlotte and vice versa between Charlotte and Panama City just are a bit too low when they're coupled with these sustained high fuel costs to justify us flying the route," said Mohr.

If conditions improve, Mohr says the airline will consider restoring the service. U.S. Airways is keeping its flights to and from Charlotte and Ft. Walton Beach and Tallahassee.

Well here it is Dec 23 and I'm making plans to come back to PCB in May 09. Lo and behold we have this news. However- since this announcement all fuel prices have dropped significantly and the situation is much better, I'm not so sure US Air believes so, and if they look a passenger count they may not be back all too soon. Perhaps in 2010 when the opening of the new airport is official, maybe they'll eliminate the Ft. Walton destination. In the mean time it looks like there or Pensacola I will fly to and drive.

Joe Moore doesn't need to drive. If he wants to be someplace, he just visualizes the location and appears there. Joe Moore controls time and space. Don't trifle with Joe Moore.

Shocking. It's only going to get worse, so I'd guess the chances of U.S. Airways coming back are about zip. But, we're going to have one heck of a nice place not to come back to when the new airport opens!
