HeathGrades evaluates and rates hospitals throughout the country.

For several consecutive years both Bay Medical Center and Gulf Coast Medical Center have been recognized by HealthGrades for their excellence.

For a rather hefty sum of money a hospital can opt to purchase HealthGrades data and findings, and the right to boast their achievement.

Pam Spires of Bay Medical Center said, "HeathGrades is rated number one. It not only helps us with marketing, which is a small side of it, we have the quality component; we use the data to make our services better."

But this year Gulf Coast Medical didn't spend the $35,000 they spent last year for the marketing rights and data.

Rod Whiting of Gulf Coast Medical Center said, "We don't need to pay 35 or 135 thousand dollars for the right to say that. We feel we can tell the safety incentives, quality of its physicians and its technology in a lot of different ways than paying another company a lot of money for that opportunity."

Bay Medical, on the other hand, spent $130,000 this year.

"We have some three-star categories we want to bring to six-star with their data. We'll be able to do that. It's an investment in our community and in Bay Medical Center."

The study rates overall clinical quality and actual mortality complication rates.
