Many people working in Walton County can't afford to live there, and the problem has become so acute that local officials plan to survey residents about the issue.
Officials say the survey by the Walton County Chamber of Commerce will give county and business leaders information they need to start addressing the problem.
The chamber plans to survey about 1,000 residents.
Walton County Planning Department officials say housing costs, especially in South Walton, far exceed what the average middle-income worker can afford.
Home prices in the area range from $300,000 to $1 million.
Employees in the department commute from as far away the Panama City-area or Alabama because they can't find housing in Walton County.
