A Sunday afternoon fire left a five-year-old girl and her mother's home heavily damaged.

Flames and heavy smoke caused severe damage to the apartment in the Callaway area on North Comet Drive, located between Cherry and Highway 22.

Although the fire never spread past the bedroom, it caused severe smoke damage throughout the entire apartment.

The fire even blew out the bedroom's window and scorched the family's mattress. Springfield and Callaway fire departments responded and were able to knock it out within just three minutes.

The mother and her young daughter said they're shaken up, but glad only material items were destroyed. The American Red Cross is assisting with temporary lodging and food.

The state fire marshals blame the fire on a lighted candle.
