Eastside City Discusses Possible New Tax

The City of Springfield claims to be the largest remaining city in Florida that doesn't pay a city property tax. But that could be changing.

Parker, Panama City Beach, and Springfield residents are the only cities in Bay County that don't pay city property tax.

But with rapid development, and the increasing needs of the city, Springfield officials say they may need to collect money from somewhere and an ad valorum tax could be the answer.

Springfield leaders have compiled a needs study of the costs the city will face in the next few years. This includes necessary road paving, and several unfunded improvements mandated by the state.

Implementing a property tax is just one idea. Commissioners will consider alternatives like a road impact fee as well.

The mayor of Springfield says property taxes weren't considered in the past because property values weren't high enough. But of course now with all this development, that's changing.
