Hurricane building codes in the Florida Panhandle will now be set by the Florida Building Commission, not the Legislature, under a bill sent this week to Gov. Jeb Bush.
The House gave final approval to a bill that ends a special exemption in the Panhandle to state requirements for protection against windborne debris.
The bill does require that the Panhandle still receive special treatment. It tells the Florida Building Commission to adopt standards in the Panhandle that specifically address ongoing wind studies that lawmakers last year ordered.
The bill delays implementation of any changes until 2007.
