House Speaker Allan Bense won't be seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate despite appeals from Gov. Jeb Bush and other top Republicans.
In a statement released by his legislative office, Bense says he's extremely honored and humbled by the support and encouragement, but that he has decided not to run because he does not want to be away from his family and his home.
Bense, of Panama City, just completed his second and final term as speaker of the state House and had been wooed by several top party members to get into the GOP primary.
U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris is already in the race, challenging Democratic incumbent Senator Bill Nelson.
