New Jail, Water and Sewer Systems, and the new County Government Complex

Bay County commissioners are about to take a big financial leap in order to build a new county jail.

The commissioners on Tuesday are expected to approve issuing $42.5 million in bonds to pay for the new facility.

The new jail will be located next to the jail annex on Nehi Road in Bayou George. Sales tax revenues will repay the money. CCA, the Corrections Corporation of America, will build and operate the jail.

The commissioners will also decide if they want to buy the troubled Bayside and Sandy Creek water and sewer systems for about $2 million.

And the county wants to start building its new administrative center and library at the 11th Street Shopping Center by early next year. The commission is expected to approve a January termination date for the leases of the seven tenants who now occupy the complex.
