Authorities ID Three Killed in U.S. 231 Accident

Authorities have released the names of three people killed Wednesday night when the sport utility vehicle they were riding apparently stalled while crossing Highway 231 and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

The wreck happened near the Madrid community two miles north of the Florida/Alabama state line on U.S. 231.

Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said 32-year-old Kenneth Lamar McDaniel of Cottonwood, and his daughter, 14-year-old Nicole Shefold, survived the 8 p.m. wreck that killed his wife, 31-year-old Lisa Byrd McDaniel, their son, 10-year-old Johnny McDaniel, and the son's friend, nine-year-old Caleb Wise.

The father, who was driving, was treated at a hospital and his daughter, who was ejected from the vehicle along with one of the other children, underwent surgery Wednesday night. Their conditions were listed as critical.

The semi-driver from Tylersville, Texas, was not injured.

The Alabama Highway Patrol is investigating.
