A man is dead tonight after drowning in the Gulf of Mexico at Panama City Beach despite the bad weather. It happened around 2:45 Wednesday afternoon behind the Emerald Beach Resort.

According to Major Dave Humphrey's of the Panama City Beach Police the man apparently had been drinking and decided to go swimming. He was with a group of friends at the resort when he went in, the friends didn't notice that he was in trouble until they saw him floating. They then called police.

When rescue crews arrived they pulled the man to shore, and performed C-P-R but were not able to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's name has not been released, and his body will be turned over to the Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
