The organization Habitat for Humanity helps build homes for families across the U.S., and now they're helping the environment by going green.
Today in Ft. Walton Beach, local officials held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction on the group's first green home, and organizers say they're excited about giving back to the environment.
The non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity will build its first ever green home here on this piece of land in Ft. Walton Beach.
For Dorothy and Carl Newberg, this day is the start of their new life.
Project organizers say they started working on the going green concept several months ago. With the help of Boeing Construction they were able to turn Habitat for Humanity into a green organization.
Michelle Schmid said, "I couldn't have asked for a better outcome and so quickly. I mean, this has happened in just a matter of two month and it's come to fruition and it's exciting. I'm so excited."
Habitat for Humanity officials say this lot will eventually hold the first citified green home in Okaloosa County and they hope to have one more built by the end of this year.
The future homeowners, builders and community leaders broke ground on the site Friday and the project manager says he hopes this house will help kick off a green movement among builders in the area.
Frankie Gibbs, Project Manager, said, "We have to all play our part in doing what we can to take advantage of reusable resources and use them to the maximum extent possible, and I think that's a big part of our future.
Builders say they expect to have the house completed in four months.
