Scientists Recovering 40-Million-Year-Old Manatee in Andalusia

Scientists and the USDA Forest Service are recovering the remains of a 40-million-year-old manatee discovered in the Conecuh National Forest in Andalusia.

Officials say the forest service is working with paleontologists from the McWane Center in Birmingham and Auburn University students this week to collect and preserve the fossil.

The recovered fossil will be used for science and education.

The fossil was discovered earlier this month by Jimmy Stiles, a herpetologist at Auburn University.
