Officials Hope to Restart Walton/Destin Beach Restoration

Plans to restore the beach in Walton and Destin are underway again after the death of a sea turtle stopped the project for several months.

Officials have met this week to discuss details of restarting the project. The earliest that can be is October 1.

The most pressing issue is if the company that started the project will continue. The U.S. Army Corps halted the project in May and forced the company to move out after another sea turtle was killed in the process.

About half of the seven miles of beach was completed by the time work stopped. None of the two miles of Destin beach was restored.

Negotiations will be held in a few weeks and local officials expect an agreement to be reached by the end of July or August.
