Three people are dead following a traffic crash this weekend on US 331 south of Freeport in Walton County. The accident happened on the north side of the Clyde Wells Bridge across Choctawhatchee Bay.
The Florida Highway Patrol identified the fatalities as 43-year-old James D. Rook and his wife, 41-year-old Margie L. Rook, both of Cincinnati, Ohio. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The third fatality was identified only as a 29 year old freeport resident.
Troopers say a pickup truck driven by Jesus R. Bernal of Freeport had passed a vehicle and wound up on the shoulder of the road. He overcorrected and crossed over to the opposite land of traffic and struck the front of the other car, hitting it nearly head on.
Bernal and his passenger, 41-year-old Alfonso Rivera, were both seriously injured and were transferred to a Panama City hospital.
The investigators say the Saturday evening crash was alcohol related. Charges are pending.
