Getting a migraine is not what most women want, but new research indicates the headaches may protect women from breast cancer.

Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center studied the migraine history of women with invasive breast cancer and those without the disease.

They found women who had been clinically diagnosed with migraines had a roughly 30 percent reduced risk for breast cancer.

Experts say research shows hormones play a role in both migraines and breast cancer. Having too much estrogen has been linked to breast cancer, and having too little estrogen has been linked to migraines.

So by default, a woman's lack of estrogen may stop cancer from forming, but it doesn't stop migraines.

Experts say this information is interesting, but more studies are needed. They say women should continue to have regular breast screenings.
