Three Local Fatalities Sunday

Two people were killed Sunday night in separate traffic accidents within 15 minutes of each other. One occurred at 6:45 p.m. on the west side of the Hathaway Bridge and the next occurred at 7 p.m. in Bayou George.

The first occurred at the west end of the Hathaway Bridge when a car traveling at a high rate of speed went out of control and began to spin. It crossed all three lanes of westbound traffic and overturned in a construction area.

A passenger, Dusty James Satterthwait, 25, of Panama City Beach was thrown out of the overturning vehicle and was dead at the scene.

The driver, 45-year-old Iuliu Antonio Diaconescu, also of Panama City Beach, was not injured. He’s been charged with DUI.

The second accident Sunday night occurred on Titus Road a half miles west of U.S. Highway 231. Killed was a 65-year-old man who was riding a bicycle. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the bicyclist had no light and insufficient reflectors when he swerved into the path of a pickup truck pulling a trailer. The truck driver, 28-year-old Dewey Allen Goff of Panama City, was not charged.

A local man was also killed in an Okaloosa County crash Sunday night at the intersection of Highway 98 near the intersection of State Road 293.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jeremy L. Sweat of Youngstown, Florida was heading west in the center westbound lane on his motorcycle when he failed to stop at a red light and hit the rear of a 2003 Infiniti sport utility vehicle.

Sweat was ejected and died at the scene. The collision also pushed the Infiniti into a 1983 Ford Mustang in the same lane ahead of it. No one in either vehicle was injured.

Some witnesses who spoke to first responders at the scene did not leave their names or addresses. Deputies would like to be able to talk to them to gather any significant information regarding the crash and/or the motorcyclist’s actions prior to the crash.

Any witnesses are asked to please contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 651-7400.
