Probation Officer Sentenced

A state probation officer who lives in Cottondale has been sentenced for sexual misconduct with client.

Joseph Cannoy, 57, was a 17-year employee of the Department of Corrections, most recently working in the Chipley Office of Probation and Parole. He will now be supervised by officers from that office.

Circuit Judge James Fensom sentenced Cannoy to one year of house arrest, followed by four years of probation. He was fined $5,000.00 and ordered to complete 300 hours community service work.

Cannoy was arrested for having sex with a person being supervised by him between September 1, 2003, and February 28, 2006.

"Probation officers are invested with the public trust," said State Attorney Steve Meadows. "Mr. Cannoy violated that trust and was held accountable for that violation. It is important for our citizens to know that no one is above the law. Those who break the law will be diligently pursued; regardless of position or standing."
