Lynn Haven Police have made an arrest in the death of a toddler last week. The man they have in custody is the boyfriend of the child's mother.
After returning home from a bonfire party, the baby apparently kept the man awake. It enraged him enough to brutally murder her.
Lynn haven police say 4529-A Carla Lane is where 25-year-old Dennis Peewee Creamer brutally murdered 2-year-old Haley Marie Cain, on December 7. They say he kicked the toddler, beat her head against a wall, and threw her across the room, while her mother slept in the room next door. Creamer then put the toddler back in her bed.
Autopsy results show she suffered a lacerated liver, ruptured spleen, broken ribs, and her teeth came through her tiny lips. The medical examiner is still trying to determine which of the injuries proved to be fatal.
"At some point in time in the night, she got out of bed and made it halfway from the bed to the bedroom door, and that's where she collapsed on the floor and did die. We don't know how long, how many hours she laid there with the internal injuries. With the secretions going on inside her body it was very painful," said David Messer, Lynn Haven Police Chief.
Chief Messer says Creamer left the house the next morning, after discovering the toddler had died, leaving the child's mother to discover the body.
Originally he told police the injuries came from an accidental fall. But they reenacted his story with a dummy the size of the child and the toddler's injuries were much too severe to match his statement.
"At some point in time he finally gave up and said OK, you got me. This is what happened, this is what I did, and what he did is terrible. There's no person let alone a two-year-old child should have had to go through what this baby went through," said Messer.
Creamer appeared in court for the first time Thursday afternoon. He's facing charges of premeditated murder and aggravated child abuse.
No one else has been charged, but police aren't ruling out that possibility.
Police speculate the child was unconscious or suffocating during most of the attack and may not have been able to cry or scream.
Two other children, Creamer's niece and nephew, were staying at the home that night of the murder. They were not hurt.
