Valparaiso Family Urges City to Drain Pond

It's been five years since Valparaiso city leaders promised to turn a swampy area into a park where a nine-year-old died of a mosquito-borne virus.

City leaders even promised to name the new park after Jackie Landsverk's son, Cody, who died of Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

In the years since Cody Landsverk's death, a joint storm water treatment project has been completed and a concrete dam has been put in to raise the water level and help filter runoff before it reaches nearby Turkey Creek. Vegetation and flowers were planted at the water’s edge.

But the uplands area looks much the same as it did five years ago.

Lydia Hernandez, who inherited responsibility for parks when she was elected to the Valparaiso City Commission last spring, says she was told all promised work had been done.
