Panama City Beaches City Council appointed a new mayor Thursday night.
Gayle Oberst became the city's 5th mayor and the first female to hold the post.
Oberst is in her second four year term on the beach council. She has been serving as the city's vice mayor since April of this year.
Oberst is taking Lee Sullivan's place. Sullivan resigned as mayor in an unsuccessful attempt to win the state representative's seat from district six.
The council will be selecting a representative from ward 2 to take Oberst's former place on the council. There will be a special meeting on November 27th to fill the vacancy.
