Bonifay has been trying to get a new hospital for some time now, and that time has finally come.

Just last week Doctors Memorial Hospital received more than $16 million in bonds for a brand new facility.

The new state-of-the-art hospital will be twice the size of the current building and will feature much more modern equipment.

Private rooms with private baths will replace semi-private rooms. A new emergency room is also in the works. Residents won't have to travel outside the county for specialized care.

"We're planning to offer the very same services we're offering here with some expansion of our services. We plan to have mammography service. We plan to have bone densometry service there, and we're hopeful of discovering and offering some new services we don't even know about right now," said Doctors Memorial Hospital CEO Robert Winkler.

The new hospital will be located just south of Interstate 10 on Highway 79.

Architects will break ground on the new hospital as early as February.

Construction should be finished in about nine months.
