The inmates in the Gulf County jail in Port St. Joe could be headed to Bay County.
Next Tuesday, Bay County commissioners will consider allowing Gulf County to house its prisoners here in Panama City.
Gulf County Sheriff Dalton Upchurch says he can no longer afford to operate the ancient jail in Port St Joe and plans to turn it over to the county January 1st.
Gulf County commissioners have no experience in running a jail, and they have been talking with Bay County about the long and short term costs involved in sending 50-55 inmates to our facilities which are operated by C-C-A.
The initial indications are that Bay County could not be prepared within the next two weeks because of all the details that would have to be worked out, such as transportation, booking, first appearances and liability issues.
