A pesky pest that took over the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina has been found in Bay County.

The Formosan termites have set up shop at berg-steel pipe at the Panama City port. These pictures are just an example of what the very aggressive termites looks like.

"The colony that we have here has been established for about four or five years. We did have a swarm of it. And it did show evidence of that. The biggest concern is we have a new species of termites," John Newman, Vice President of Davis Exterminators said.

The colony is located in one of the plant's maintenance buildings. Officials from the University of Florida suspect an infested boat brought the Formosans to the port.

Davis Exterminators in Panama City is handling the case. The termites build their nests, called cartons, above and below ground.

"These cartons get so large and dense that it can cause sheet rock to buckle and break loose," Newman said.

The termites love moisture. So if you have leaky pipes in your home, you might want to get them fixed.

"The biggest thing a homeowner can do is there inspections, do preventative treatments around your soil. Keeping the gutters and any construction problems that they have, make sure that they stay on top of that and don't let that go," Newman said.

The difference between regular termites and Formosan termites. Instead of producing thousands of bugs, Formosans can produce millions of them. Costing you a lot of money if the termites get into your home.
