Many more students will be able to attend Chipola College in the coming years, because of an event this weekend in Marianna.
About 500 donors contributed more than $30,000 Saturday at the "Big Sam Mitchell" fundraiser at the National Guard Armory.
Mitchell's wife, Nellie, and Chipola College President Dr. Gene Prough greeted the guests to a celebration of Mitchell's life and education legacy.
Mitchell, affectionately known as "Big Sam" for his height and larger-than-life personality, devoted his entire life to education and public service.
After graduating from Chipola College, he coached high school football and basketball.
Then Mitchell turned his attention and energy to politics, representing the Panhandle in the Florida legislature for more than 20 years.
Friends and family say he always remembered his Washington County roots.
The money from Saturday's fundraiser will establish an endowed scholarship at Chipola College in Mitchell's name.
