A Good Neighbor

The Impala Motel has sat near the Gulf waters since 1976. The 21-room motel is owned by Arlene Zacher and Bob Gilmore who say sitting by the pool isn't exactly paradise for the tourists.

Gilmore says, "In danger of being hit with concrete, boards, nails, pieces of tin. Not to mention the inconvenience of being splashed by paint and concrete."

The Celadon Condominiums are rising high just west of the Impala. A spokesman for Yates Construction says the company used an independent firm to monitor the safety when work first started. He also said it's important to realize wind will always move debris.

Gilmore says if the winds move the debris, the workers should have more safety requirements.

"I understand this is new, this kind of proximity of construction has changed because they've changed the rules so that they can now build closer to adjacent properties."

Gilmore says employees with Yates did clean up the cars outside the motel when he complained. Yates Construction is building several condos on the beach and Gilmore says he would just like to ensure the next neighbor is better protected.

"They said they have insurance, they showed us their insurance coverage, as if this is to reassure my guest."

The construction will continue for now, but not for long. Ground is set to break at the Impala Motel shortly after Labor Day weekend to make way for one more condo on the beach.
