It happened around 1 p.m. at the Cofeen Nature Preserve also known as the four mile village just off Highway 98 in Sandestin. No one was injured by the fire.
The Department of Forestry quickly dug a trench around the blaze to keep it from spreading. A huge cloud of smoke spilled onto Highway 98 and could be seen for several miles.
Fire officials say they do not know what caused the fire.
Cofeen officials say a resident first noticed smoke and then called a property manager who then called the fire department.
