In preparation for the potential effects of Tropical Storm Ida, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) is making November food stamp benefits available to current recipients earlier than normal.

The measure is intended to ensure that storm-impacted residents have an adequate food supply during the post-storm period.

The advance distribution applies to participants of the regular food stamp program in the following counties: Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, Holmes, Jackson, Washington, Calhoun, Bay, Gulf, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Wakulla, Liberty and Franklin.

Benefits are normally available on a staggered schedule from the first to the 15th of each month. The change will allow about 30,000 households to use their benefits earlier than normal. These families should be able to access their benefits using their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card tomorrow morning.

More information on the Food Stamp Program is available at http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/ess/ or by calling 1-866-762-2237.

Shirley and PCB, you obviously just don't get it! A very wise man once said: It is better to teach a man how to fish rather than to give him a fish. Giving someone food when they are sick or hurt is completely different than when there is nothing wrong with them other than they are out of work and too lazy to find SOME kind of work. I am sorry but there are too many people that think unemployment, food stamps and government assistance in some form is a right that they have coming to them and they actually look forward to receiving it when in fact no matter how you look at it - it is a handout - it is charity - it is your fellow Americans paying for YOUR way.

I WISH THAT MORE PEOPLE COULD SEE THAT HELPING JUST A LITTLE MAKES A GREAT BIG DIFFERENTS IN MOST OF OUR LIVES SOMETIMES JUST SAYING A KIND WORD OR A PAT ON THE BACK WHATS WRONG WITH GIVING THEM THE FOOD STAMPS THEY ARE GOING TO GET THE SAME AMOUNT ANYWAY AND IN MOST CASES WE HAVE FAMILY TO HELP US OR A GOOD CHURCH BE KIND AND SEE WHAT KIND OF REWARD YOU MAY GET

What you and your family could do is get a job during the slow winter months even if it is flipping burgers. I am 62 years old, could have filed for disability from the military but did not because there are others worse off, have never ever once collected unemployment although could have, and have never ever collected foodstamps although could have. I have done without many times and yet have always found some kind of work to provide for my family without ever taking a dime in handouts from ANYONE and God has NOTHING to do with it but rather I am old fashioned and believe in adapting and making my own way without charity. I only look down on those that whine and choose to blame others for their plight!
