Walton county sheriff's investigators have identified a man who drowned in the gulf trying to save his family.
It happened around 1 p.m. Monday near the surfside resort in South Walton. Fifty-four-year-old Mark Steven Voigt apparently jumped into heavy rip currents to save his son and daughter.
A lifeguard was already in the water trying to pull-off a rescue. He says he told Voigt to stay on-shore, but Voigt ignored the warnings.
The lifeguard managed to save the son & daughter, but lost sight of Voigt.
South Walton fire officials found him a short time later and pulled him ashore. But it was too late.
Voigt was in the Air Force.
He was stationed in England and was visiting South Walton county.
