The company says a computer error double-billed customers who used debit cards on May 12. A spokesman says the customers have now been all paid back.
Publix's operates three stores in the Panama City area and several in Santa Rosa Beach, Destin and Ft. Walton Beach. The problem occurred in all 819 of the Publix stores.
A spokes person, Maria Rodamis says things were handled directly with credit card companies, since there was no way to contact each customer directly. She says Publix does not track customers’ purchases or personal information.
Rodamis says the problem was limited to shoppers who used their debit cards on May 12 at Publix cash registers.
She says those using ATMs at Publix stores were not affected.
