Jackson county sheriff's investigators tell Newschannel 7 it happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning in Cottondale at the railroad crossing on Highway 231 just north of Highway 90.
Cars were carrying gravel at the time of derailment.
There are no injuries to report. Traffic in the area of the derailment was reduced to one lane while the accident area was cleaned.
