7th Annual Buddy Walk Kicks Off

The 7th Annual Buddy Walk took place Saturday morning at Aaron Bessant Park. Families and community members came together to celebrate down syndrome awareness month.

The walk kicked off with music, facepainting, and performances as attendees prepped for the mile long walk.

The event is used to promote awareness and acceptance of people with down syndrome while raising funds to benefit the group Acton Up With Downs.

Those funds are used by the local organization to provide scholarships to families with children with down syndrome to help them attend conferences and educational seminars as well as pay for therapy.

"Seeing the kids with down syndrome come out and they feel like they're at home," says Acton Up With Downs President, Jared Jones. "This is like Disney World or Christmas day for them. So the excitement in their eyes and the level of enjoyment they have - that's my favorite part."

A portion of the funds raised also goes back to the national organization to work with lobbyists, research, and other advocacy programs.
