When asked why he took part in his church's community project, twelve-year-old Bryan Schmidt said he wanted to do his part.
“Just to help the community because some people don’t have as much money as most people so we're helping them out with the school supplies.”
Bryan and several other volunteers will spend plenty of hours over the next few days stuffing pencils and papers into book bags. On July 31, First Assembly of God Church in Crestview plans to hand out the bags at the first annual book bag giveaway, which will include games and visits by city officials.
“They have just over 500 backpacks now but the goal is to have 2000 ready for the first day of school.”
Pastor English says so far his church has provided the labor and the bags but he's still hoping for some last minute help.
“We’re trying to get the community involved in this. We know that the way this community is going to be reached and helped is through networking. Getting other businesses involved, other churches involved too.
Bryan says it’s worth it. “It makes me feel great. I mean just to help the community. It’s awesome.”
