Health Care Reform Bill Passes Late Sunday Night

An historic vote unfolding Sunday on Capitol Hill on landmark health care legislation.

Democrats spent the week counting votes; one congressman they can now count on is Rep. Allen Boyd.

"[The bill] does have a significant number of improvements in it that will help stem the tide of increasing costs of the health care system in this country," explained Boyd.

Unlike the November House bill, Boyd says this package meets his criteria for responsible reform. He says it reduces health care costs and increases access.

Some locals agree: "I can't afford to get my own health insurance and my job doesn't offer it. I just had an accident, I've got thousands of dollars worth of bills," said Larry Mathias.

The bill will provide health care coverage to 32 million uninsured Americans, like Mathias.

But, others say this isn't a step in the right direction.

"The government's taking over too much of the economy and too much over our lives, telling us to do things we don't need to do," said George Seaman.

A student loan overhaul is now lumped into the health care reform package. That would make the federal government the sole issuer of student loans, putting 700 local Sallie Mae jobs at risk.

Boyd, who rallied with local employees back in November, says he is working hard to make sure those jobs aren't lost.

"I know that the student loan program will continue, it'll have to. There will be lots of folks involved with that, doing servicing work and other things," claimed Boyd.

As for re-election, Boyd says he isn't thinking about that when casting his vote: "I have a very clear conscience and I feel that this bill, this health care reform, is a significant step in solving a major problem in this country."

On the House floor Sunday night, Rep. Boyd gave a spirited speech in favor of the Senate version of the health care overhaul. He elicited a vocal response when he said Republicans had not produced any viable alternatives to reform the system.

The Senate will take up the reconciliation "fix" bill, which includes the student loan changes, this week.

Time for Boyd to go. He had an easy ride into office, he avoids REAL questions and refuses debate. He promised in person to protect Sallie Mae jobs and vote against this bill that has fudged numbers. The real cost is over 2.5 trillion adding 1 trillion to the deficit. It cuts benefits to seniors, hospitals and doctors. Boyd was bribed $918,230 in campaign donations to vote yes for this bill. HE SOLD US OUT!!! Now the government gained control of another 17% of our GDP with this bill. If they get their way, it will add up to 48% between the credit, banks, automotive, housing, student loans, and energy. This bill also invites the IRS to do monthly audits on everyone to make sure they buy government mandated insurance. They are using our constitution as toilet paper! We needed real reform, not a takeover. 2.5 trillion to cover 35 million, and yes it does include illegals (Page 50 Section 152). I doubt any of them even read the 2,700 pages of this bill.

I asked my democrat friends, "Where is all the money coming from to pay for the trillion dollar Obama healthcare Bill?" They say that all the rich people will pay taxes to finance it. I then ask them, Do you mean the "rich" people who own large and small businesses that provide jobs for everyone who is not already working for the government? You know who I mean, businesses like restaurants, retail stores, Home Depot, Lowes, car dealers, repair shops, construction jobs, etc etc. They say, yeah the rich people who own businesses. My next question to them is, "And what happens when those businesses fail because they can't afford to pay the higher taxes and keep operating?" Then my democrat friends get this blank look on their face!!!! Good luck everyone, you better be prepared!

Boyd claims "I know that the student loan program will continue, it'll have to. There will be lots of folks involved with that, doing servicing work and other things." Sure there will be lots of folks involved in the servicing work. But guess what Bay County has an origination center. If Salliemae can't originate Student Loans guess who is out of a job? Boyd do you think any of the 700 Bay County employees are happy with the knowledge that those jobs could be added to a servicing center somewhere else in the country?
