Horne Steps Down From Top Florida Education Post

State Education Commissioner Jim Horne says that he is quitting as head of the Florida Department of Education for family reasons.

Horne was in charge of the whole public education from kindergarten to college, but one small part of that system has been under intense scrutiny in the last year or so.

Gov. Jeb Bush's effort to allow parents of children in failing public schools to go to private schools using vouchers has come under fire because some of the private schools have proven to have problems.

Some have been accused of fraud, and there have been criminal charges against at least one school that once received voucher money.

Education Department spokeswoman Frances Marine says Horne is stepping down for family reasons. He has been commuting from his home in the Jacksonville area to Tallahassee for three years.
