Since the Cape Saint George Lighthouse collapsed in 2005, several residents came together to try to bring it back.
Now, state legislators are chipping in to help pay for the reconstruction of the lighthouse.
And, legislators are looking at the reconstruction efforts as a great investment.
"I remember when the lighthouse was standing and we used to enjoy going to see it and we had picnics there," one resident said.
However, for many, these memories have been blemished.
In 2005, the Saint George Lighthouse collapsed, following years of beach erosion and numerous impacts by tropical storms.
But since the collapse, a neighbor has made it their mission to rebuild.
Now, state legislators are awarding thousands in grant money for the reconstruction.
Dennis Barnell said, "I always thought hard work would bring this project to fruition."
These days, inmates are helping build the surroundings of what will be a full restoration of the Cape Saint George Lighthouse, just a few miles from where it used to be.
Brick by brick, Dennis and other residents plan to rebuild the lighthouse to its original state, which they say will make this the first reconstruction of a lighthouse in about 100 years.
Residents and legislators are also hoping the lighthouse restoration provides a lot more than just a pretty view.
State Representative Will Kendrick said, "We feel comfortable that this will have a tremendous economic impact."
Construction’s total costs are expected to exceed $400,000 dollars.
Reconstruction of the Cape Saint George Lighthouse will officially begin with a historic brick laying ceremony, Saturday September 15 at 10AM.
The public is invited.
