The Panama City Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency's decision to invest in a sub-station for the police department has apparently paid off.

City officials say the investment has allowed police to work closer with businesses and home owners in the area, causing there to be a significant drop in the number of arrests made and number of calls for service. Police and officials attribute this drop to a combination of an increased presence of police and the members of the community working with police to help them find and fix problem areas.

"The initiative has had a positive impact in reducing a lot of those offenses," said Panama City acting police chief Scott Ervin. "It also just shows an emphasizes when we work together s a community and as a police department that those partnerships can go a long way."

Overall, police officials report that arrests in the downtown area are down 30.3%.
