LYNN HAVEN - The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a former teacher they say confessed to sending an obscene picture to one of his former students.
Joe Johnson, 24, was arrested Wednesday on charges of Distribution of Obscene Material to a Minor, a third-degree felony.
A 15-year-old girl, who took Johnson’s class when she was at Mowat Middle School, called the Sheriff’s Office around 10:00 p.m. on November 2. She said Johnson sent her a picture of his exposed genitals using an app called Snapchat. Snapchat allows the user to send a photo or video to friends. But it’s only available to the recipient for 1-10 seconds and is gone in a “snap.” But before this photo disappeared, the Sheriff’s Office says it was witnessed by two of the victim’s friends.
Johnson turned in his resignation to Bay County Schools on November 8. The school district says they will send information about Johnson’s resignation to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practices. It will decide whether to revoke Johnson’s teaching certificate.
