Bay County Gets Weapon Against Heart Disease

Tuesday, Bay Medical Sacred Heart announced the opening of two new cardiac catheterization labs.

The two million dollar investment improves on the already noninvasive process. Doctors can now take half as many X-ray photos of a patient and use half as much dye in the blood stream, reducing both procedure time and exposure to X-rays.

The digital monitors also give doctors a better view of problem areas. It is all part of big changes made in the last couple decades.

"We were doing open chest surgeries to deal with cardiac arrhythmia, and now a vast majority of that is done through catheter based procedures. It has been a dramatic transition in my career in cardiac care," says Dr. Joe Trantham.

According to officials, the two new labs will create shorter procedure times for patients, but most importantly allow for a growing number of heart patients in the area.
