Next school year Bay County high schoolers can say goodbye to the days of getting up before sunrise and struggling to stay awake in first period. By a unanimous decision Tuesday, Bay County School Board members approved a 45 minute later start to the high school day. The first bell will ring at 8:15 a.m. with the day ending at 2:45 p.m.

"That age group of students, they just need to sleep longer, and they need to sleep later because their minds just don't start working until a certain time," said Bay District Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt.

The school board also approved moving forward with several changes to the district's dress code policies.

"I don't think that that a small embellishment on the pocket of a pair of jeans is going to make any difference in the school environment," Deputy Superintendent Sandra Davis told school board members.

Bozeman Learning Center officials will be happy after Tuesday's meeting. Superintendent Husfelt said he won't reccomend closing down the elementary school for rezoning purposes.

"There's a very strong possibility of some growth in that area," Husfelt said.

And school board members solidified board policy revisions forbidding teachers from enganging in inappropriate relationships with their students and certain higher-ups. They also added wording that cautions school officials about what they post on social media.

"We're not trying to catch anybody. We're trying to prevent problems," Husfelt told the board.

Board members also approved allowing Husfelt to award $10,000 bonuses to any principal of his choice who agrees to take over one of the county's lowest performing schools.
