Bay District Schools Look to Increase Security

Bay District School officials are looking for more people to beef-up school security.

After last year's Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut, Bay County School Superintendent Bill Husfelt formed a task force to help out with the district's safety plans.

One of the recommendations was placing school resource officers on every school campus. Another was creating a new position to strictly handle school safety. That person will work directly with the district's security chief Mike Jones.

"That person should be doing staff development, training our teachers and staff on how to react to active shooters, severe weather drills, help them write their school safety plans and modify them every year," said Bay District Schools Security Chief Mike Jones.

School board members approved the creation of the new position today. They hope to hire someone before the beginning of school this fall.
