Bay District Schools Renews Contract for School Resource Deputies

PANAMA CITY - Bay District officials will be shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to maintain the number of school resource officers currently on local campuses.

School board members voted Tuesday to renew the district's contract with the Bay County Sheriff's Office for 11 school resource deputies and 1 supervisor.

That means the district will be paying $55,000 for an extra deputy.

Apparently the grant that paid that salary last year has run out.

"We knew the grant wasn't there and it was very obvious we all wanted St. Andrew's to be covered so we knew we were going to have to spend more money. 99.9% sure nobody was going to give us that," said Bay District Schools Superintendent, Bill Husfelt.

Bay District Schools will be paying more than half a million dollars to the Sheriff's Office this year to supply school resource deputies.

Board members vote on the final budget in a few weeks.
