Boat Captain Gets Jail Term for Crash

A local boat captain will be going to prison for a little more than a year and a half for ramming his boat into another vessel.

Circuit Judge Elijah Smiley sentenced 46-year old Brian J. Bruhmuller Monday to 19-point 2 months on 6-counts of misdemeanor battery and one count of felony criminal mischief.

Bruhmuller was piloting a 37-foot fishing boat across St. Andrew Bay on the night of June 23rd, last year without his running lights.

At the same time, Christopher Hasty was bringing a boat-load of passengers back from Shell Island, aboard a 21-foot vessel. 2-of his passengers began yelling there was another boat in his path.
Hasty tried to avoid Bruhmuller's boat, but struck the stern.

In his apparent anger, Bruhmuller turned around and u-boned the Hasty's boat. Hasty had 2-other men, 1-woman and 2-teenagers on-board. 3-of them were hospitalized for their injuries.

Bruhmuller faced up to 11 years in prison. But he scored the minimum prison term.

This isn't Bruhmuller’s first conviction. He served 3-and-a-half years of a 17-year sentence for a 1986 second degree murder and attempted arson conviction.
