Two Airmen Released, Three Remain Hospitalized

Update 6-15-12: Two Hurlburt Field Airmen have been released from the hospital, and three remain hospitalized for injuries received when their tilt-rotor aircraft crashed during a routine training mission on the Eglin Range Wednesday.

Major Brian Luce and Tech. Sgt. Christopher Dawson have been released from Eglin Air Force Base hospital.

Captain Brett Cassidy, Tech. Sgt. Edilberto Malave and Staff Sgt. Sean McMahon remain hospitalized at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, but are all in stable condition.

None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The 8th Special Operations Squadron who flies the CV-22 is returning to normal operations, but there is no flying until next Tuesday while squadron members continue to set up support for the injured Airmen.

A board of officials is investigating the accident. Base officials stress that the accident site may contain hazardous materials released from the crash, and ask that individuals refrain from entering the area.

6-13-12: The Air Force is investigating the crash of a CV-22 Osprey aircraft Wednesday night on the Eglin Air Force Base reservation in Okaloosa County.

The Osprey crashed at about 6:45 PM Wednesday evening, north of Navarre during a routine training mission. There were 5-crew members on-board. We don't know the extent of their injuries. But we have been told all five were taken to a hospital.

The Osprey is one of a number of CV-22's assigned to Hurlburt Field's 1st Special Operations Wing. The aircraft can take-off like a helicopter, then rotates it's wing-mounted engines to fly like a conventional plane.

The Osprey has not had the best of safety records, suffered a number of fatal crashes, during it's development.

An Air Force board of officers will investigate the crash.
